Composting for Kids:
Lesson Plans in Compost Education

The red worm also has a lot to offer in the field of education, and teachers are developing lesson plans in "composting for kids."  Surprisingly enough, compost education can be very enlightening in a world concerned about degradation of the environment; health problems arising from poor diets; and climate changes that may be caused, in part, by the heavy use of fossil fuels in industrial agriculture. There are many science-based books out on composting for kids, but The Red Wriggler Teaching Manual is a new breed.

This manual has applications for all ages, from elementary to college level, and it can be used with a worm composting bin in the home as enjoyably as in an academic setting. The manual explains the growth of the organic food industry and why the value of red worm compost has resulted in the development of the vermiculture/vermicompost industry. It contains exercises on the biology of the red worm but also challenges the students with lessons in worm-related mathematics, social sciences, language arts, and arts and crafts. The curriculum will introduce students to an important new field of knowledge, stimulate creativity, and also provide guidance about how to live more gently and successfully on earth.
